Ruba and Anna met Deeba (pictured here with Anna) on 25 July. Deeba is a wonderful criminal judge who had to flee Afghanistan with her young family when the Taliban took over and released all the criminals she had sent to prison! She is desperate to make a new life as a lawyer in this country and is looking for classes to teach her English Law and opportunities for work shadowing and volunteering as she is not allowed to earn any money as an asylum seeker.
On 24 August, Anna met with Deeba, who went to sit in on a criminal case in a UK crown court. The differences in the judicial systems were worth exploring as there are no juries in Afghanistan, instead three judges sit and deliberate the verdict.
